Massage
is a wonderful tool which the mother and her birth partner can
use to help with pain relief and to lessen anxiety during labour.
Massage can be of particular use during the early stages of labour
when stronger pain relief may not be necessary to make the mother
feel more comfortable. Massage also gives the birth partner a
'role' and helps him/her to feel more involved.
Massage helps the release of pain relieving hormones called endorphins.
Massage works in a similar way to a TENS machine by blocking the
pain messages being sent to the brain through the application
of pressure. Massage also helps to loosen muscles which are working
hard with contractions.
Massage
helps the body to release oxytocin and prolactin . Oxytocin aids
the progression of labour, helps to expel the placenta after birth
and helps to promote feelings of attachment and bonding between
mother and baby. Prolactin prepares the body for breastfeeding
by stimulating milk production.
The Labour Massage Workshop is designed for the mother and birthing
partner, the workshop can take place at your home or at Natural
Natal in Windsor.
